The Tough, Troubled and Underrated

Disturbed, introverted and tough characters were the hallmark of Gene Hackman, the actor who recently passed away in tragic circumstances at age 95. Though he was great at stone-faced comedy, as seen in Mike Nichols’ The Birdcage (1996), he will be remembered for his large gallery of obsessive, close-mouthed characters. Though he already impressed in a supporting role in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) as Warren Beatty’s older brother, Hackman really made the archetype his own in Francis Ford Coppola’s surveillance drama The Conversation (1974), a psychological

deep dive into post-Watergate paranoia. But brooding and troubled characters were a recurring feature in his filmography, especially in the many fascinating but clearly flawed authority figures he played in titles such as Alan Parker’s Mississippi Burning (1988), Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven (1992, an Oscar-winning role) and Sam Raimi’s quirky The Quick and the Dead (1995).

You go through stages in your career that you feel very good about yourself. Then you feel awful, like, ‘Why didn’t I choose something else?’ But overall I’m pretty satisfied that I made the right choice when I decided to be an actor.
