Crazy, Colourful and Broke: Sean Baker’s America
With his win for Anora, Sean Baker, born in the early 1970s in New Jersey, became the first American winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival since Terrence Malick with Tree of Life in 2011.
With eight independently made features under his belt, Baker has emerged as an important voice for the marginalised in American cinema. With his often light-hearted and happily gaudy yet always lucidly observant films, he has put a spotlight on the often invisible people at the underside of the American Dream.
To celebrate the release of Anora, the Cinémathèque has put together a programme of four films. In these features, Baker’s disenfranchised protagonists are forced to create their own opportunities whatever the cost. Whether they are (former) sex workers or young kids from struggling single-mom families, Baker’s protagonists move us and make us laugh and cry as they try to make something out of themselves in a world that most of the time seems to simply ignore their existence.
