Le Testament du docteur Cordelier
Experiment in Evil France 1959 | Jean Renoir | vostEN | 95’ | digital | Cast : Jean-Louis Barrault, Michel Vitold, Gaston Modot, Micheline Gary
Choose this one if you like your Hyde strange.
Jean Renoir takes Stevenson’s story out of Victorian London and drops it into contemporary Paris. Jean-Louis Barrault’s unnerving Opale is less a conventional monster than a disturbing, almost childlike embodiment of pure impulse.
« Experiment in Evil is not necessarily interested in the split between good and evil, and instead focuses on Cordelier’s inherent and consistent corruption which is only hidden by his reputation. And so, Renoir is not depicting duality so much as he is depicting a singular unveiling and liberation of the individual, as well the ambiguity of moral goodness. » (Mubi)
