MERL: Playground
As Merl Park became increasingly popular, new play equipment was continuously added and the playground gradually lost its overall coherence. To meet the needs of children of all ages, the City has created a new inclusive playground designed to provide a high-quality, playful and accessible space for all users.
Key dates
In July 2020, the Council of Aldermen approved the launch of the project. A civic consultation was conducted in the spring of 2021 to determine the needs of playground users. The project plans were approved by the Council of Aldermen in June 2021 and work began in September 2025. The project was completed in July 2026.
An inclusive playground
The playground has specially adapted equipment so wheelchair users can partake fully and play alongside other children, making for moments of shared play, social interaction and participation by all. Designed with different areas, the playground offers children new experiences that are both fun and educational, through varied types of play.
