Distribution of iodine tablets
Municipal plan for distributing iodine tablets
As part of the government scheme to protect the population, and notably the PIU (Plan d'intervention d'urgence – Emergency Action Plan), in the event of a nuclear accident, local authorities are required to organise the distribution of iodine tablets. To accomplish this, the City of Luxembourg has implemented a municipal plan.
Distribution of iodine tablets outside of times of crisis (ongoing)
The City has arranged the ongoing distribution of iodine tablets.
When registering at the Bierger-Center, new arrivals to Luxembourg City are issued with a box of iodine tablets, along with the necessary instructions.
Residents who have lost or never received their tablets can also request some at the Bierger-Center.
All information relating to these iodine tablets (instructions, who can take them, dosage, etc.), and to other measures linked to the Luxembourg government's emergency action plan (PIU), can be found on www.infocrise.lu.
Distribution at schools, foyers scolaires and crèches
To ensure better availability of iodine tablets for the most vulnerable age groups, stocks of tablets are held at all the City's schools, foyers scolaires and crèches.
If a nuclear incident should occur, upon instruction by the authorities, the tablets will be handed out directly to children on-site.
Distribution in the event of a nuclear incident
The municipal plan also provides for distribution to the general population in the event of a nuclear incident, so people who no longer have tablets can easily acquire some.
The practicalities surrounding this distribution will be communicated in a timely manner by the usual channels (in the media, the government website, etc.).
Instructions for use
Only take your iodine tablets if and when so instructed by the competent authorities.
That instruction will be broadcast nationwide to the population through the media and the website www.infocrise.lu.
