Monument to the Maquis
Erected in 1994, this monument was removed in 2016 by the Groupement indépendant des Maquisards luxembourgeois (Independent Association of Luxembourg Maquisards) during the construction of the tram line so it could be thoroughly restored. In 2023, the monument was positioned behind the restored fence, in the grounds of the cemetery. It faces Allée des Résistants et Déportés, offering an opportunity for the quiet contemplation its subject commands. Located at the edge of the first path, the monument inspires passersby to remember the 500 young Luxembourgers who volunteered in the Maquis or in the city of Vianden's militia during World War II, fighting alongside the Allies against the Nazi occupiers. The Maquisards operated in underground groups, often operating in small bands in isolated areas. These Resistance fighters did everything they could to evade conscription, help Allied aircraft pass over the border, and coordinate propaganda against the occupying forces. Seventy-four of them sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their homeland.
