Project description

The City of Luxembourg will be carrying out roadworks on Rue Beaumont and Rue des Capucins to make this area feel more like a pedestrian zone and improve the quality of this public space. The works will be undertaken in collaboration with the following City departments:

 • VDL – Service Voirie (Department of Streets): Raising of the roadway to be flush with the existing pavements in order to create a single continuous surface for pedestrians, in addition to changes in the drainage system, with the downspouts moved to the centerline of the roadway to ensure more efficient drainage.
 • VDL – Service Circulation (Traffic Department): A three-phase traffic ban: Phase 1: the street will be blocked off between Place des Bains and 11, rue Beaumont. Phase 2: the street will be blocked off between Avenue de la Porte Neuve and 11, rue Beaumont. Phase 3: the entire length of the street will be blocked off for final asphalting.

Works schedule

Commencement of work: 16 February 2026

Expected duration of works: 2 months

Traffic information

The affected sections will be gradually closed off to traffic as the project progresses. During Phase 1, Rue Beaumont will be closed to all traffic between Place des Bains and 11, rue Beaumont. During Phase 2, Rue Beaumont will be closed to all traffic between Avenue de la Porte Neuve and 11, rue Beaumont. Pedestrian access and access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the works. Vehicular access to private properties will be maintained insofar as technically feasible.

For businesses and deliveries:

Throughout these works, the City of Luxembourg will try to ensure access for deliveries to local businesses as far as physically possible.

In the event of large-scale deliveries, please contact our Service Circulation.

As construction progresses, there will be changes to traffic flow in this area. Appropriate signage will be put in place by the Service Circulation (Traffic Depatment). The City of Luxembourg thanks local residents, businesses and road users for their understanding and regrets any inconvenience that the works may cause.

Progress to date

How long will the work take?

The works will begin on 16 February 2026.

Completion of the works is planned for mid-April 2026.

What work will be carried out?

On the pavements, some existing kerbs will be raised and certain slabs will be replaced where they are in poor condition. The drains will be moved to the centerline of the roadway, and the areas taken up by trees will be enlarged. The roadway will be raised to be flush with the existing pavements and, to ensure a uniform finish, a final layer of coloured asphalt will be laid over the entire road surface.
