Biréli Lagrène

about

Born in 1966 in Soufflenheim, France, Biréli Lagrène is a globally recognized virtuoso guitarist and a living link to the Django Reinhardt tradition while pushing jazz forward through fusion, bebop, and beyond. Emerging as a child prodigy in the 1980s, he has blended gypsy jazz roots with modern improvisation, electrifying audiences worldwide and collaborating with legends across genres.

His illustrious career includes three-time recipient of the coveted “Django d'Or” (The Golden Django), the “Victoires de la Musique” (the equivalent of a Grammy in the US, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture) in 2001 and 2003 and in 2012, the prestigious “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) - a cultural knighthood honoring his profound impact on jazz guitar and his contributions to enriching global cultural heritage.

Gilles Grethen Big Band

About

This project was launched in September 2023 and recorded in November 2023 (Artikuss, Soleuvre, LU). The mixing and mastering were done by renowned sound engineer Michael Perez Cisneros (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Gilad Hekselman, …). The music performed is newly composed specifically for this band by Gilles Grethen.

The upcoming album will feature just under an hour of music, including references to Luxembourg (one piece, for example, is called “d’Stad”) and other important places and people from his life.
