Introduction

Inspired by the "MUR Oberkampf" in Paris, where more than 300 artists have left their mark over the years, and following on from the graffiti project at the ventilation tower at Place Guillaume II, "LE MUR LUXEMBOURG" features temporary works of graffiti and street art in a range of styles on its 30 m2 urban canvas.

Rue du Fort Neipperg

The LE MUR Luxembourg urban art project was launched in March 2022, in collaboration with the non-profit organisation I Love Graffiti, and no fewer than 13 spray can masters have left their mark on the gable wall of 23, Rue du Fort Neipperg.

New location in Rue du St-Esprit

Due to the extension of the Rocade building, LE MUR was moved to a new location in Ville Haute, where it now occupies the façade of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum at 14, rue du St-Esprit. The new location of the "Modulable - Urbain – Réactif" (MUR) concept is expected to unlock new potential for the LE MUR Luxembourg urban art project, while providing it with a home in the heart of the city centre.

Project initiated by I Love Graffiti ASBL, with the support of the City of Luxembourg.

Jean Rooble

To mark the 25th edition of LE MUR Luxembourg, I Love Graffiti asbl and the City of Luxembourg invited the French artist Jean Rooble to adorn the facade of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum with an original artwork. The public is invited to attend the unveiling, which will be held at 18:00 on Friday, 29 May, with the artist himself in attendance.

Jean Rooble – whose real name is Romain Thiriau – is a self-taught visual and graffiti artist based in Bordeaux. He developed a keen interest in drawing and hip-hop culture at an early age, before discovering painting through graffiti in the late 1990s. After an initial period when his main focus was on lettering, he gradually turned towards more figurative work.

Over the past ten years, he has specialised in producing photorealistic portraits, in a style that combines contemporary urban art with classical painting styles. Jean Rooble's work is characterised by his use of powerful contrasts between light and dark, coupled with total mastery of spray painting techniques.

Through his strikingly realistic portraits – which are often based on photographs that he has taken himself – the artist seeks to shine a spotlight on anonymous, everyday faces. His socially sensitive, accessible artwork raises questions about the role of humans in the public space, and seeks to trigger a strong reaction in viewers.
