Luxembourg City – a Fair Trade Town
The promotion of fair trade has been one of the features of the City of Luxembourg's environmental action plan since 2007. On 9 May 2011, the municipal council approved a resolution to take part in the "Fairtrade Gemeng" campaign. With this decision, the City of Luxembourg agreed to purchase, and encourage the purchase of, fair trade products and to raise awareness of fair-trade issues at the local level.
Luxembourg City has been "Fairtrade Gemeng" certified since 21 September 2011.

City initiatives
Eco-friendly textiles and equipment
Work clothing (T-shirts, polo shirts, trousers), the bath towels available for hire at municipal swimming pools, and promotional tote bags are all made from Fairtrade certified cotton. This range of sustainable textile products is continually being expanded.
Catering, snacks, beverages, receptions and more
- Fair trade and responsible sourcing criteria are mandatory in the specifications for the City's school kitchens.
- <em>Foyers scolaires</em> / <em>Centre d'Animation Pédagogique et de Loisirs</em> (Creative Learning Centre – CAPEL) activities: all of the snacks and beverages given to the children are fair trade products if they contain ingredients sourced from countries in the Global South.
- Fair trade sweets: "Tiitercher" handed out by Saint Nicholas.
- Events/receptions/meetings: the City serves only Fairtrade certified coffee. Moreover, all products containing sugar or cocoa are sourced from fair trade producers. The City also partners with local bakers to serve certified pastries and cakes.
Training and education
Fair-trade training and education sessions are held every year for City staff.
The City informs and educates the general public through its different communication channels – such as City magazine, during Neighbours' Day, repair cafés, community-garden open days, and so on – and regularly organises post-screening discussions about films that address fair-trade issues.
