Neudorf: Service Architecte-Maintenance building

Background

The Service Architecte-Maintenance (Architecture and Maintenance Department) is in charge of a range of tasks for the City of Luxembourg, including managing cultural centres, maintaining municipal buildings, storing and transporting equipment. A new building has been designed to house the department and cater to its needs, reflecting its diverse roles. The new building is in Neudorf, near the forest, and between Cents and the Kalchesbréck site.

The building's design takes account of the department's specific needs and the constraints posed by the sloping ground. The purpose was to bring together multiple activities under one roof, creating a functional infrastructure, suited for the daily work of the teams and blending harmoniously into the natural environment around it.

Project overview

The new Service Architecte-Maintenance building accommodates the department's administrative, logistical and technical activities, all on the same site. Split across several levels, it houses office space, workshops, storage facilities, archives, staff facilities and technical installations. The storage spaces are an important part, and occupy much of the building. They store equipment, supplies and school furniture.

The lower levels house the technical spaces, vehicle parking and warehouses. The ground floor accommodates the workshops and operational workspaces, while the administrative offices, canteen and changing rooms are on the first floor. The last floor offers additional storage space and space for archives.

Designed to meet the department's specific needs, the building is noteworthy for its plain, functional architecture. The profiled aluminium facades are visually representative of the storage behind them, while a horizontal band of windows provides natural light for the workspaces and staff breakout spaces.
