Background
The City of Luxembourg's Service Cimetières (Cemeteries Department) maintains and manages the city's 14 municipal cemeteries, which are located in Bonnevoie, Cessange, Clausen, Fetschenhof, Hamm, Hollerich, Limpertsberg, Merl, Neudorf, Pfaffenthal, Rollingergrund and Weimerskirch. The cemeteries cover a total of 27 hectares and currently comprise 16,168 burial plots, granted as concessions by the City's College of Aldermen.
The old site occupied by the Cemeteries Department essentially comprises an L-shaped building housing administrative offices, staff areas, some of the department's garages, and part of its workshop. There is also a large outdoor storage area with two additional warehouses, an ironmongery workshop, and additional equipment in Limpertsberg.
Project overview
The project involves the construction of a new building for the City of Luxembourg’s Cemetery Department, on the grounds of the Merl Cemetery. Organised around an inner courtyard, the complex houses administrative offices and staff areas, as well as workshops, garages and large storage areas.
Designed primarily using a mixed wood-concrete construction system, the building blends into its surroundings thanks to its wooden facades and green roofs. The project also provided for photovoltaic systems, a rainwater harvesting system for irrigation, and a Class A energy performance design.
Key dates
The final project was approved by the Municipal Council on 19 November 2018. Work began on 1 September 2019 and was completed on 28 February 2025.
