Background
The project to build a new municipal crèche at no. 9, Rue George C. Marshall was based on a feasibility study conducted in 2014. That study found that a new building could be erected north of the existing crèche by taking advantage of the site's topographical features, while at the same time preserving the old building for subsequent repurposing.
Project overview
The new crèche can accommodate six groups of children, i.e. three groups of 0–2 year olds, and three groups of 2–4 year olds. Designed to provide a warm, welcoming environment, the building is divided into two spaces connected by a central entrance and blends in seamlessly with the site's topographical features.
All of the units have been designed with direct access to the outdoor spaces, which include a large garden, a playground, vegetable planter boxes, and trees that were preserved on the plot of land. Each group has its own living spaces, toilet facilities and, for the youngest children, dormitories, which means that the groups can run independently.
The project prioritised natural light and the creation of comfortable, flexible spaces with a design that makes the most of the site's topographical features, a split-level roof, and a structure built using reinforced concrete, providing long-term durability and conversion options for the future.
Key dates
The final project was approved by the Municipal Council on 17 October 2016. Works commenced in May 2017, and the crèche opened its doors in August 2022.
