Background
In 2009, the City of Luxembourg acquired the former Greisch farm, located at 166, rue de Beggen, with a view to honouring the previous owner's wish for the site to be used for social activities. The complex, consisting of the old farmhouse, barn and shed, required a complete renovation as well as an upgrade of its infrastructure.
This project has preserved and now showcases our architectural heritage, in this case dating from the early 20th century. The farm's distinctive features, such as its facades, windows and doors, the roof and the supporting structure, have been preserved and restored, with a focus on regional and natural materials. A new and contemporary extension has been added, creating a cohesive whole while ensuring the original farmhouse is still recognisable as such.
Project overview
The site is now home to the Communication Centre for the deaf and hearing impaired, which includes the "Hörgeschädigtenberatung" service as well as several organisations dedicated to supporting people who are deaf or hearing impaired. The former farm buildings now house the non-profit organisation Den Cent Buttek, which distributes food to people in need.
Organised around a shared inner courtyard, the project encompasses offices, meeting rooms, a media library, and a multipurpose room equipped to meet the special needs of hearing-impaired people, and communal spaces. A new entrance, an elevator serving all floors, and accessible outdoor facilities ensure that the building can be used by everyone. The renovation also included a complete overhaul of the structure and roofing, asbestos removal, and the redesign of the inner courtyard to include breakout spaces, landscaping and a new rainwater management system.
Key dates
The final project was approved by the Municipal Council on 10 July 2017. Work began on 8 March 2018 and was completed on 1 July 2022.
