Forest cemetery

In a multicultural society like ours, it is important to give each and every individual the opportunity to be laid to rest in a manner that is in keeping with their ideology and beliefs. An increasing number of Luxembourg citizens have expressed the wish to return to nature after their death.

To be able to fulfil the final wishes of these residents, the City opened a forest cemetery in the heart of Cessange forest. The forest cemetery covers 12.5 hectares and is divided into four parcels.

Interment at the Bëschkierfecht

To be interred at the Bëschkierfescht, the deceased's last place of residence must have been Luxembourg City and their remains must have been cremated. During the funeral, the deceased's ashes are interred near an oak tree and are thus returned to nature. The maximum number of interments per tree is ten. Each tree bears a number indicating its location, as well as an aluminium plaque with the names of the deceased. There is also a space near the forest cemetery where ashes can be scattered. This option is also available to non-residents who died in Luxembourg City.

Choice of tree

After issuing the grave deed, the Civil Registry officer (agent de l’État civil) will assign a tree and provide its number.

Price

The fees that apply for grave deeds, as well as for the interment and scattering of ashes, are set in the City of Luxembourg’s tax regulations (règlement-taxe).

The fees are as follows:

  • Scattering of ashes without a ceremony: €50
  • Scattering of ashes with a ceremony: €100
  • Interment of ashes without a ceremony: €75
  • Interment of ashes with a ceremony: €100

If they wish, families can choose a symbol they wish to have engraved on the plaque, preceding the deceased’s name. The number of inscriptions per plaque is limited to 10.

Interment

After the cremation, the funeral home will transport the urn containing the ashes to the Bëschkierfecht, where the City of Luxembourg’s Service Cimetières (Cemeteries Department) will inter the ashes near the tree selected by the Service État civil (Civil Registry Department). The plots where the ashes are interred are approximately five centimetres deep. Each plot can contain only the ashes of a single deceased. Religious ceremonies can also be held under a shelter erected for this purpose.

Funerary decorations

The Bëschkierfecht is located in an entirely natural setting. In keeping with the City's policy on protecting the natural environment, no personal decorations whatsoever are permitted.
