On Friday, 22 May 2026, the City of Luxembourg's College of Aldermen, represented by Mayor Lydie Polfer and Alderman for Education Paul Galles, along with Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture Martine Hansen, officially inaugurated an organic-waste sorting station at the municipal foyer scolaire in Rue des Vergers in Bonnevoie. This joint initiative demonstrates the partners' commitment to promoting more sustainable waste management and to educating the younger generation about food waste.

Since it was established in 2009, the Service Foyers scolaires (Childcare Department) has been deeply committed to promoting healthy, balanced and equitable diets for children. Educational activities centred on food are an important part of children's daily routine at the City's foyers scolaires.

In 2025, two City foyers scolaires – the Bonnevoie Verger and Cessange centres – were among five educational and childcare facilities in Luxembourg that were chosen to participate in the antigaspi project spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture (Ministère de l'Agriculture). During that period, several initiatives – such as activities with a focus on diet and nutrition, and the initiative to redesign the buffet – were also undertaken with the aim of educating children about reducing food waste, and encouraging them to try new things and discover a wider variety of food.

In keeping with these actions, since the start of the 2025–2026 school year, the Service Foyers scolaires has been working on solutions that would allow them to track leftover food in greater detail. As part of that initiative, the Service Foyers scolaires, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, purchased two sorting tables where waste can be weighed and then tracked digitally. The data that is collected is used to identify the foods that the children eat the least. Then, working with a team of nutrionists and the caterer, the Service Foyers scolaires can adjust the menus, while at the same time continuing to offer a rich, varied diet.

These actions align perfectly with the National Action Plan for a Sustainable Food System 2026–2030 (Plan d'Action National - Alimentation) which, in its priority objective entitled "Combat food waste", provides for improving the collection of statistics on food waste and supporting innovative initiatives that seek to reduce food waste.
