The Luxembourg-Dommeldange school and sports complex, which was designed in 1980, had reached the point where it could no longer meet the needs of a dynamic, ever-changing district. To renovate and modernise the site without having to close the school, the City of Luxembourg commissioned the construction of a temporary school building to be used while the work was ongoing.
Project overview
The project entails the construction of a temporary school building in Rue Nicolas Hein. Designed by ARCO - architecture company, the building houses 18 classrooms for elementary school Cycles 1–4, five support rooms, a canteen, a library, and a craft room, as well as all of the administrative, technical and sanitary facilities required to keep the school operating smoothly.
The building was designed to be simple and functional, blend into the configuration of the site, and preserve as many of the existing trees as possible. Its facades are covered in vertical wood cladding, and the interior spaces are designed to provide a comfortable learning environment during the transition period.
The outdoor facilities include a multi-level schoolyard, a covered courtyard, and an additional playground reserved for Cycle 1 pupils.
The final project was approved by the College of the Mayor and Aldermen on 1 July 2022. The final project was then approved by the Municipal Council on 26 September 2022.
Work began in September 2023 and was completed in October 2024.
