Geographic location

Pfaffenthal has a surface area of 37.52 hectares and is located in the heart of the capital. It borders

Weimerskirch to the north;
Kirchberg and Clausen to the east;
the Grund to the south; and
Ville-Haute, Limpertsberg and Eich to the east.

The Alzette runs through the Pfaffenthal neighbourhood from north to south, dividing it into two parts: west and east.

History

Pfaffenthal is one of the city's most historical neighbourhoods.

Luxembourg's first hospital and first maternity ward were established here, back when the city still had its fortress. With the Alzette running along its centre, Pfaffenthal was the ideal location for the city's many craftsmen. Tanners set up their workshops here, conveniently downstream from the city. They produced leather for the glove manufacturing trade, a valuable source of income for the city. Life was governed by the river, which provided the energy for numerous mills. During the 17th century, the Urbanist Poor Clares moved into the building where the Pfaffenthal Hospice is currently located.
