History

In the year 963, Count Siegfried acquired the rocky promontory known since those times as the Bock, and established his residence there.

A small fort called Lucilinburhuc used to stand on this spot, and the word "Luxembourg" evolved from this name. A small town quickly grew to the west of the Bock, which was recognised as a city by Countess Ermesinde in 1244. When Count John the Blind of Bohemia left for Prague to become king, the château was abandoned. In the 14th century, the first rampart that included the Grund was built. Conflicts and armed confrontations between the major European powers led to the fortress being extended on several occasions.
