Overview
On this page, we introduce you to various Luxembourg fruits and berries with a long tradition behind them. Once the fruit is ready to be harvested, the City will suggest a variety of recipes for cakes, jams, juices and syrups.
Fruits and berries can be picked in the Hamm valley. These fruits are intended for private use, not for sale or mass production.
Serviceberry
Serviceberry (Amelanchier lamarckii) – known as "Eeschpel" in Luxembourgish and "Felsenbirne" in German – is a small tree that can grow to a height of between 4 and 6 metres. It flowers from April to May, and its fruit is ready for picking in June. The fruit's mild, sweet taste is not unlike a blueberry's. It is ideal for use in compotes, jams, tarts and muffins.
Black chokeberry
Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), known as "Apelbier" in Luxembourgish and "Apfelbirne" in German, is a small shrub that grows to a height of between 1 and 3 metres. It flowers from April to May, and its fruit can be picked from August to September. The fruit has a tart, slightly sweet flavour, and is ideal for compotes, jams and juices.
Cornelian cherry
Cornelian cheery (Cornus mas), known as "Kierelter" in Luxembourgish and "Kornelkirsche" in German, is a small tree that can reach up to 4 or 5 metres in height. It flowers early, from February to March, and its fruit can be picked from August to September. The fruit has a tart, cherry-like taste. It is often used in compotes, jams and liqueurs.
Blackcurrant
Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), or "Schwaarz Kréischel" in Luxembourgish and "Schwarze Johannisbeere" in German, is a small shrub that grows to between 1 and 1.5 metres in height. It flowers from April to May and bears fruit from June to July. The fruit is tangy and very fragrant. Blackcurrants are particularly good for compotes, jams, syrups, juices and sorbets, and are often used in cakes and desserts.
Redcurrant
Redcurrant (Ribes rubrum), known as "Rout Kréischel" in Luxembourgish and "Rote Johannisbeere" in German, is a small shrub that grows to between 1 and 1.5 metres in height. It flowers from April to May and its fruit can be picked from June to July. The fruit has a tangy, refreshing taste. Redcurrants can be used in compotes, jams, jellies, juices, syrups, tarts and desserts.
Gooseberry
Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa), known as "Déck Kréischel" in Luxembourgish and "Stachelbeere" in German, is a shrub that grows to between 1 and 1.5 metres in height. It flowers from April to May and its fruit is harvested from June to July. The fruit tastes tangy and sweet at the same time. Gooseberries can be used in compotes, jams, syrups, pies, cakes and desserts.
Raspberry
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus), known as "Hambier" in Luxembourgish and "Himbeere" in German, is a small shrub that grows to between 1 and 2 metres in height. It flowers from May to June and its fruit is harvested from June to August. The fruit is tangy and sweet. Raspberries are ideal for compotes, jams and desserts.
