Background
The name "Spidolsgaart" dates back to the site's former use. The square once served as the forecourt of the military hospital built around 1685 by Vauban. It was one of the largest military buildings within the Fortress of Luxembourg. Over the years, the building underwent several transformations, serving in turn as an infantry barracks, a bed factory, a tobacco factory and a museum, before being completely demolished in the 1950s.
In 2017, the Pfaffenthal-Siechenhof local interest association submitted a proposal to redevelop the square known as "Spidolsgaart" to the City of Luxembourg's College of the Mayor and Aldermen. This was followed by two public consultation meetings, and the redevelopment project was ultimately approved by the College of Aldermen in 2021.
Project overview
The project involved the complete redevelopment of Place Spidolsgaart in Pfaffenthal, transforming it into an open, welcoming and multifunctional neighbourhood space. The square now features an enlarged playground, relaxation areas, and a pedestrian and cycle link between Rue du Pont and Rue Kowalski. The project also aimed to preserve and integrate the existing vegetation.
In addition to the redevelopment works, this square saw the installation of the sculpture "De midde Waasserdréier" and an information panel highlighting the historical importance of water in the history of this neighbourhood.
Key dates
The final project was approved by the College of the Mayor and Aldermen on 28 June 2021, and then by the Municipal Council on 12 July 2021.
The redevelopment works started on 11 January 2022 and were completed in March 2024.
