On 16 and 17 May 2025, the QuattroPole network brought together more than 130 participants from Luxembourg, Metz, Saarbrücken and Trier for the second edition of its cross-border Hackathon. Over the course of 24 hours of intense activity, students, professionals and innovation enthusiasts joined forces to collectively reimagine the city centres of tomorrow.
Reimagining the city centres of tomorrow with QuattroPole
Revitalising city centres is a key concern for the four cities that make up the QuattroPole network. How to reconcile attractiveness with economic dynamism, sustainability and adapting to climate change? These issues were already discussed in depth at the first QuattroPole economic forum held in November 2024. The debate then continued in the form of the Hackathon, which was officially opened by Bertrand Gossot, President and Founder of STEPVIA Conseil. STEPVIA provided four cross-functional levers to prompt inspiration for reimagining the city centres of today.
At four different iconic locations – the Luxembourg City Incubator; the Maison de l'Innovation, de l'Entrepreneuriat, des Écoles et de l'Université (MIEEU) in Metz; the East Side Fab incubator in Saarbrücken; and the Trier Galerie shopping centre – the participants worked in cross-border teams to come up with innovative solutions to transform city centres, with a focus on four strategic themes:
- Digitalisation of city centres
- Management of vacant commercial spaces
- Tourism
- Retail
Inspirational ideas, and a winning team
On 17 May 2025, after many hours of creativity and collaboration, the teams presented their projects to an international panel of experts, who assessed their ideas against six different criteria: Innovation, inclusion, desirability, feasibility, sustainability and measurability.
The panel chose one of the five teams from Metz as the overall winner of this year's event, awarding the €3,000 QuattroPole prize to the TERRACITY project.
Each city also awarded a €1,000 Panel's Favourite prize, with support from local authorities and partners. The winning teams were:
- Luxembourg: LËTZPERIENCE project
- Metz: NEXT CITY project
- Saarbrücken: NAVIGATION WIZZARDS project
- Trier: MY CITY project
The winning Hackathon team will be invited to present its solution to various QuattroPole bodies.
