On Friday, 9 October 2026, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Luxembourg welcomed the capital's 139,000th registered resident to City Hall. A small gift was presented to mark this milestone in the city's continued growth.

Mayor Lydie Polfer had this to say:

"Luxembourg City continues to grow while preserving the qualities that make it such an attractive place to live. Situated at the heart of Europe, our capital stands out for its human scale, cultural diversity – reflected in the 168 nationalities represented here – and accessibility. Its green spaces and family-friendly facilities for children and young people are also key to its appeal. Together, these many assets make Luxembourg a wonderful place to live and visit.

Covering 52 km², the capital accounts for less than 2% of the country's total area. Yet its urbanised areas, which occupy around half of this territory, are home to nearly 20% of the national population, or 139,000 residents. Every day, the City also welcomes around 65,000 cross-border commuters, representing almost one-third of all cross-border workers employed in Luxembourg. In addition, one in three jobs in the country is located within the capital.

Since 2000, Luxembourg City's population has grown from 79,713 to 139,000, an increase of more than 74%. In response to this sustained growth, the City and its municipal services work every day to ensure that development remains sustainable and balanced. By listening to residents and responding to their needs and expectations, we continue to develop services, infrastructure and projects that reflect the realities of everyday life, while further enhancing the appeal and quality of life that make our capital such a special place to live.
