State Visit by the President of the Republic of Finland

On Tuesday, 29 September 2026, His Excellency Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland, and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, who are on a state visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, were welcomed to City Hall by Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, for a symposium.

Following the presentation of the members of the College of the Mayor and Aldermen and the Municipal Council, the ceremony opened with an address by Mayor Lydie Polfer, followed by a speech by H.E. Alexander Stubb. In her address, Mayor Lydie Polfer highlighted Finland and Luxembourg's shared commitment to European values. She stressed that these values, like peace itself, can never be taken for granted and must be constantly safeguarded. In closing, she emphasised the importance of building trust, fostering dialogue and strengthening cooperation as essential to preserving peace and deepening ties between nations.

The Finnish presidential couple and the Grand Ducal couple were then invited to sign the City of Luxembourg's Livre d'Or (official guest book). The symposium concluded with the presentation of official gifts. On this occasion, Mayor Lydie Polfer presented the President of the Republic of Finland, on behalf of the City of Luxembourg, with a replica of the Renert sculpture. The original work was created in 1932 by Luxembourg sculptors François Demuth and Ernest Grosber as a tribute to the national poet Michel Rodange.

Following a reception held in the lobby of City Hall, H.E. the President of the Republic of Finland and H.R.H. the Grand Duke proceeded to the European Investment Bank, while Mrs Innes-Stubb and H.R.H. the Grand Duchess visited the National Centre for Victims of Violence.
