Patrimoine et migrations, une relation réinventée au jour le jour

The Gare district has traditionally been shaped by a diversity of social backgrounds and geographical origins. Today, with 83% of its residents being foreign nationals, it is the most cosmopolitan area of Luxembourg City. This reality is rooted in a very specific history: the establishment of Luxembourg railway station (1858), the gradual urbanisation of the Bourbon Plateau from the 1860s onwards, the merger of the formerly separate municipalities of Luxembourg and Hollerich-Bonnevoie (1920), and more recently the redevelopment of former industrial and craft areas into residential zones.

However, despite this apparent continuity, profound changes have taken place in the district since 2004, when the Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations humaines first organised the guided walk “Migration and Heritage” in the Gare district. These economic and socio-cultural transformations have had a significant impact on the area’s rich and diverse heritage. Tracing these ongoing developments through eight thematic stages allows us to address key questions in today’s heritage discourse: what is heritage? who defines heritage? for whom is heritage created? heritage or heritages?
