Course description:

A music-focused course: Afro-Caribbean rhythms and percussion techniques.

This class explores traditional Afro-Cuban and Dominican percussion and rhythms.

The aim is to develop your ear for rhythm, your rhythmic precision and your mastery of the instruments.

Rhythms covered:

Afro-Cuban rhythms (son, salsa, bolero);

Dominican rhythms (merengue, bachata);

Puerto Rican rhythms (salsa, cha-cha-cha);

African rhythms (kuku, sinte, tiriba).

Instruments covered:

Congas;

Clave;

Maracas;

Güiro;

Campana;

Djembe.

The studio is equipped with all these instruments. It is therefore not necessary – though welcome – to bring your own instruments.

No previous experience is required. This course is aimed at anyone curious to learn Afro-Caribbean and Dominican percussion, whether a beginner or an experienced player.

Dance can provide further insight and complement the programme, and dancers wishing to gain a better understanding of the rhythms they dance to will also find this course beneficial.
