Words of condolence to the family and friends of Colette Flesch
Message of condolence
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Colette Flesch.
Luxembourg has lost a remarkable stateswoman whose exceptional commitment has shaped the country in lasting ways. As the first woman to serve as Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, from 1970 to 1980, she was a driving force behind the modernisation of the capital and helped pave the way for a new generation of political leaders. During her tenure, she guided the city through a period of profound transformation, strengthening its position on both the national and European stages. She was also the first woman to serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs, further cementing her pioneering role in Luxembourg's political history.
At this time of mourning, we remember a highly respected woman whose trailblazing career and steadfast commitment, particularly to gender equality and the liberalisation of abortion, continue to serve as an inspiration for future generations.
On behalf of the Municipal Council of the City of Luxembourg, I extend my sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of Colette Flesch.
Lydie Polfer
Mayor of Luxembourg City
