The DOODLES art installation by Letizia Romanini was officially unveiled at the Gare elementary school on Thursday, 19 June 2025 in the presence of Mayor Lydie Polfer and Alderman for education Paul Galles. The official ceremony, which was attended by pupils and staff, was held as part of the school's Open Day and was followed in the evening by a vernissage for the parents.
In pursuit of its goal to improve quality of life in this neighbourhood, the City of Luxembourg is broadening and facilitating access to culture. Integrating contemporary art into the pupils' daily environment and incorporating it into the curriculum contribute to the democratisation of culture.
The project was initiatied by the City of Luxembourg's municipal museums. The art works by Letizia Romanini were acquired for the collections of the municipal museums with the specific purpose of exhibiting them in a public space, in particular a school. The sculptures were put in place by museum staff. This project reflects the museum's aspiration to act beyond its walls, extend its reach to remote audiences and make art easily accessible to all.
The art work
When creating the art installation, which is composed of fifteen sculptures made of enameled ceramic, Letizia Romanini drew inspiration from the absent-minded movements we all make with our hands when writing, like tilting a pen and doodling. The artist then transmuted these motions into something tangible, namely ceramic. In this way, the art installation embodies two temporalities: one is rapid – almost instantaneous even – while the other slow and methodical. The pieces also give pride of place to the smallest of everyday acts, fostering mindfulness among pupils.
Cultural aspect
Owing to both its wistful subject matter and physical esthetic, the art installation offers a wealth of talking points for engaging children both in educational activities and exploring art.
Learning about art can help open children's minds to new ideas and ways of thinking, in particular art that is abstract and innovative. The aim of such classes is often to create a personal connection to a specific piece of art. In this case, the artist took on this mission herself, hosting a number of art workshops for the C1-C4 classes, each tailored to the specific age group and level of understanding of the pupils.
The artist
With a diploma from the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg (with a specialisation in soft sculpture), Letizia Romanini (born in 1980 in Esch-sur-Alzette) went on to attend the Centre de formation des plasticiens intervenants à la Haute école des arts du Rhin (HEAR) in 2018. Sharing her home between Strasbourg and Luxembourg, her hybrid approach mixes elements of art installation, scupture and painting, exploring spaces in 2D and 3D. This multi-faceted artist has exhibited her work in France, Germany and Austria, and took part in the Salon du Cercle Artistique de Luxembourg in 2021 and 2024. In 2015, she was one of a select few chosen to represent the City of Luxembourg at the Prix d'art Robert Schuman. Her DOODLES art installation was exhibited at the "Ceramic Brussels" international fair from 22 to 26 January 2025, in collaboration with the Luxembourg art gallery REUTER BAUSCH and with the support of Kultur-lx – Arts Council Luxembourg.
