Two new trailers for forest school classes
On Wednesday, 3 June 2026, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen officially opened two new “Waldkindergartenwagen” – trailers fitted out with teaching resources, for pupils of the City’s primary schools.
Introduced in 2017, “Bëschklassen” provide an opportunity for children in Cycle 1 of elementary schooling to have some of their classes outdoors, in the forest or in other natural spaces. “Bëschklassen” classes are held three mornings a week. The aim of this educational approach is to provide the conditions for children to reap the benefits of learning in natural surroundings, by placing emphasis on experience-based learning, developing children's motor skills, fostering their independence, and nurturing their connection with the natural world.
To further develop these open-air activities and cater to growing interest, the Service Enseignement (Education Department) has acquired two new educational trailers. These mobile facilities – which are 11 metres long and 2.5 metres wide – serve as shelter for children in bad weather and at break times, and also as storage for the teaching materials required for outdoor activities. The trailers are fitted with gas-fuelled heating, dry-flush toilets, and seating for the children. The new trailers have been installed near the water tower in Kirchberg, and in the so-called “Schwaarztstéck” in Beggen, and join the existing fleet of mobile classrooms in Kockelscheuer and Eecherfeld.
This initiative serves to reaffirm the City’s commitment to providing innovative, nature-oriented forms of education, catering to children’s needs and to changing teaching practices.
