A new creation for LE MUR Luxembourg

To mark the 25th edition of LE MUR Luxembourg, I Love Graffiti asbl and the City of Luxembourg invited the French artist Jean Rooble to adorn the facade of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum with an original artwork. The public is invited to attend the unveiling, which will be held at 18:00 on Friday, 29 May, with the artist himself in attendance.

An artist who combines graffiti and classical painting styles

Jean Rooble – whose real name is Romain Thiriau – is a self-taught visual and graffiti artist based in Bordeaux. He developed a keen interest in drawing and hip-hop culture at an early age, before discovering painting through graffiti in the late 1990s. After an initial period when his main focus was on lettering, he gradually turned towards more figurative work.

Over the past ten years, he has specialised in producing photorealistic portraits, in a style that combines contemporary urban art with classical painting styles. Jean Rooble's work is characterised by his use of powerful contrasts between light and dark, coupled with total mastery of spray painting techniques.

A socially sensitive take on the public space

Through his strikingly realistic portraits – which are often based on photographs that he has taken himself – the artist seeks to shine a spotlight on anonymous, everyday faces. His socially sensitive, accessible artwork raises questions about the role of humans in the public space, and seeks to trigger a strong reaction in viewers.
