Due to tram-line extension works, the tram service will be partially suspended in Kirchberg between late July and mid-August 2026 – the ideal period for works of this nature. Repair works on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge and upgrade works on the Schuman Tunnel will also be carried out at the same time, requiring the temporary closure of the latter, which will affect traffic. Alternative solutions are being implemented by Luxtram, the City of Luxembourg, the Public Transportation Authority (Administration des transports publics) and the National Roads Administration (Administration des ponts et chaussées) to ensure uninterrupted mobility and to minimise the impact for users.

As part of the ongoing works to extend the tram network in Luxembourg City and to improve sustainable mobility, works will be carried out at the junction of Avenue John F. Kennedy and Boulevard Konrad Adenauer to connect the first extension to the line that is currently in service.

In addition to the works mentioned above, works will also be carried out to build the platform for the new tram extension, which will be connected to the existing network. All of these works reflect the City's commitment to progressively expanding the public transport system in Luxembourg City, so as to provide users with efficient and reliable public transport services, with a focus on high-quality travel options and passenger comfort.

Changes to municipal bus services

While the works to connect the new tram extension are ongoing, several changes will be implemented to ensure that the City's bus services can continue without disruptions, particularly between the city centre, Kirchberg and the airport.

From 22:00 on 22 July until 15 August 2026 inclusive, in addition to the diversions currently in place affecting buses travelling towards the city centre, AVL lines 6, 16, 18, 21 and CN5 travelling towards Kirchberg will also be diverted via Rue du Fort Niedergrünewald and Rue Charles-Léon Hammes. While the works are ongoing, bus services to the "B.E.I. Quai 1" stop will be suspended. Passengers are asked to use the "Philharmonie / Mudam Quai 1" and "Niedergrünewald Quai 1" replacement stops instead.

Passengers are also advised that AVL line 29 buses operate a direct service to the airport from the following stops: "Howald, Gare / P+R Quai 2", "Lycée Bouneweg / P+R Quai 1" and "Gare Centrale Quai 1".

For travellers who usually take the tram towards the airport, AVL line 6 and 16 buses from "Hamilius Quai 1" and "Stäreplaz / Étoile Quai 1" are also an option. Users travelling from the airport are advised that AVL line 6, 16, and 29 buses also operate direct connections to the city centre and Luxembourg Central Station.

Additional works on the Schuman Tunnel

In addition to the tram-line connection works, the National Roads Administration has also scheduled works on the Schuman Tunnel (OA818) in Limpertsberg. These works are scheduled to take place from 22:00 on 10 July 2026 until 17:00 on 14 August 2026. Site preparation works are scheduled to begin on 1 July 2026. To minimise the overall duration, the works will continue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The purpose of these works is to ensure the structure's long-term sustainability, and to maintain safe traffic conditions. More specifically, the works will involve renovating some structural components and upgrading the tunnel's equipment.

The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 22:00 on 10 July 2026 until 17:00 on 14 August 2026. The National Roads Administration will take advantage of the tunnel's closure to conduct stripping tests. These tests will help to better define the scope of the road repair works scheduled for 2027. Spot repairs to damaged areas may also be carried out.

Alternative routes have been planned to make travel easier:

  • in the city, buses will be diverted via Allée Scheffer to guarantee service to and from Kirchberg
  • on the motorway network, drivers coming from Belgium and France will be directed towards Kirchberg via the Serra roundabout.
