Ukrainian musicians Misha Kalinin and Roksana Smirnova have spent the past decade developing a distinctive musical partnership through numerous performances together. Coming from diverse musical backgrounds, they bring a rich and nuanced approach to their collaboration. Misha reimagines the guitar’s expressive potential with inventive textures, while Roksana combines classical precision with the spontaneity of improvisation. Their original compositions, marked by impressionistic colors and rhythmic intricacy, create a vivid sonic layer that enhances the visual experience of the silent Soviet film In Spring. 

Directed by Mikhail Kaufman in 1929, In Spring is a poetic documentary that captures Kyiv awakening after winter. Through lyrical imagery and dynamic montage, the film offers a vibrant glimpse into everyday life and nature, seen through the lens of Soviet avant-garde cinema. 

The CinEast jazz matinée at Neimënster invites you to experience this unique interplay of film and live music - a journey through the rhythms of spring and the everyday, brought to life by an evocative jazz soundscape.
