D'MÉIW / THE SEAGULL

by Anton Chekhov

A scencic reading and free adaptation into Luxembourgish by Thierry Mousset and Mathieu Delaveau

Summer. It is warm, and a family is gathering by the lake. Konstantin has dropped out of his studies and, with Nina—of whom he is madly in love—has prepared a play that is meant to revolutionise the theatre. In the audience are his mother, the famous Arkadina, and her lover, the successful writer Trigorine. But Konstantin's worst nightmare comes true: a quarrel breaks out before the play has even finished. The family relationships are severely shaken, new couples form, and nothing will ever be the same again. Chekhov's The Seagull is one of the most-performed plays in the world, and this is the first time the text has been staged in a modern adaptation in Luxembourgish. Free, direct, unfiltered. The characters stand at the centre of a generational conflict and of social tensions that have lost none of their relevance to this day. What place do the young have? What is worth fighting for? Where are compromises made, and what must one believe in life? The characters in this classic seek stability and meaning. They love one another, talk past each other, try to believe in one another and, in doing so, are so strangely and movingly human, just like you and me.
