Wednesday, 4 June 2025 saw the official opening of the recently renovated Notre-Dame Cemetery (Nikloskierfecht) services building in Limpertsberg. To mark the occasion, the City of Luxembourg is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Eric Chenal. The exhibition was put together in close collaboration with the City of Luxembourg's Service Bâtiments (Buildings Department) and Cultural Coordination Department, and staged by the MILIU collective.
The exhibition gives visitors the chance to discover Chenal's captivating photographs, which were taken in several stages to document and commemorate the building's renovation. In 2022, Chenal was commissioned by the City of Luxembourg to document the transformation of the old mortuary by taking photographs of the building before, during and after the renovation work. The resulting photographs provide a detailed view of the different stages of the restoration process, from the preparatory work to the finishing touches. They highlight the technical challenges faced, the architectural choices made, and the decisions taken as the project progressed, whilst reflecting the artist's unique experience, as well as the experiences of the craftspeople involved. Particular attention was paid to the lighting, which plays gently on the walls as the day goes by and, in so doing, becomes a humble companion in preserving the spirit of the place. The exhibition includes a text about the building's history, written by Robert Philippart.
