The City has long been committed to safeguarding urban biodiversity. Trees play a crucial role, in that they beautify the city's various neighbourhoods, improve air quality and, on hot summer days, have a more-than-welcome cooling effect due to their dense canopies and the shade they provide. They are also essential habitats for many animal species.
Tree register and tree maintenance
The municipal tree register is a valuable tool for providing the general public with tree-related information. Currently, there are 23,126 trees recorded in the tree register, which reflects the steady growth in the number of trees in the city. With the data in the tree register, the City can better monitor the condition of trees and improve the effectiveness of inspections. Trees are classified according to their function, and those growing in schoolyards and playgrounds undergo thorough annual inspections. The database is updated whenever trees are felled or new trees are planted, in compliance with the law on environmental protection. Of the 190 species recorded in the database, the most frequently occurring are maple, lime, oak, ash and plane.
