cube #19 - Jules Péan (LU)

The installation New Rocks brings together two material research projects, New Rocks and Potatoes, that explore overlooked materials and their transformation into sculptural and collectible design objects.

Working with construction debris and sediments collected from the Rotonde 2 as well as locally sourced residual materials from Luxembourg like mining waste, minette iron ore, and potato-starch, the projects reactivate geological and organic processes through hand-shaped, hybrid biomaterials.

Bound with natural agents such as salt, starch, mycelium and lime, these materials are transformed into sculptural forms that do not merely imitate erosion, growth, or sedimentation, but actively participate in these processes.

New Rocks produces collectible, biodegradable consoles and modular furniture pieces that can be arranged in various heights and configurations, while Potatoes
creates ethereal, floating forms from inflated potato starch, suspended or displayed with recycled copper tubes and lights. By putting artificial ‘new’ stones and delicate starch-based structures in dialogue, the installation blurs the boundaries between the monumental and the humble, the durable and the ephemeral, the visible and the overlooked.

The project invites visitors to reconsider their relationship to materials, consumption and everyday landscapes, turning what is often dismissed or seen as waste into a source of care, attention, and aesthetic value.
