On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, the City of Luxembourg's College of Aldermen officially opened the exhibition "Mäi Quartier" in Place de Strasbourg. The exhibition is part of the "Light Leaks Festival" which, this year, features the Gare district and its unique atmosphere as its central theme.
The "Mäi Quartier" exhibition is the result of an artistic project by the Luxembourg Streetphoto Collective. For the project, disposable cameras were given to people who live and work in the Gare district – including local residents and members of the "Club des Jeunes" (Youth Club) – so they could capture and document simple yet unique moments reflecting their daily lives and surroundings. Their photographs, which are now on display in Place de Strasbourg, offer an assortment of intimate and authentic views of a dynamic district that is constantly in a state of flux. The exhibition will be on display in Place de Strasbourg until early July.
Elsewhere in the Gare district, along the walkways of Luxembourg Central Station, is an exhibition put on by the Luxembourg City Photothèque (Photo Library) – which boasts a collection of some 7,000,000 photographs taken from the 1860s onwards – featuring a series of carefully selected photographs affording a fascinating window into the district's past and how it has changed over time. These historical photographs, which date from 1900 to 1992, add contrast and perspective to the other photographic projects exhibited during the Festival. In this way, the exhibition weaves a fascinating visual dialogue between the past and present, inviting viewers to reflect on how the urban landscape has changed over time. "Around the central station" is on display along the walkways of Luxembourg Central Station until 1 June 2025.
