One of the most mythical places in Germany, etymological consensus has it that Loreley (lureln Ley) would mean the “murmuring rock”, referring to the uncanny echo produced by the imposing cliff emerging from the the Upper Middle Rhine. Romantic poets such as Heinrich Heine. drew inspiration from the folk legends surrounding the rock to tells us the story of a fair maid who, disgruntled by her lover, jumped into the river thus turning into an evil mermaid. Ancient legend or product of the romantic imagination? Mermaid, fairy or poorly-understood ancient goddess? We do not know. What we know is that the tale of Lorelei bears resemblance to a myriad of others all across Europe.
We also know that we are going to hike, both sides of the river.
