Rétrospective

Terence Davies

Master of Melancholy

Often referred to as one of the most talented British filmmakers of his generation, Terence Davies unexpectedly died in October at the age of 77. The Liverpool-born director came to the fore over 40 years ago thanks to three incredible short films, now dubbed The Terence Davies Trilogy, which already showcased the intricate way in which he explored time, memory and emotions through an intensely personal prism. Even when inspired by literary sources rather than autobiographical material, Davies’ protagonists always feel like alter egos for a marginalised – whether by his class, his sexuality or his sensitive worldview… – soul who observed our complicated world from the sidelines in ways that are deeply moving exactly because they feel so personal. His films aren’t about what happens but about how characters feel about what happens to happen to them.

I do think that film is closest of all to music. Notes and chords on their own don’t mean anything. They only mean something when you juxtapose them with something else.
