This multi-venue exhibition is an adaptation of Jean-Marc Jancovici's and Christophe Blain's comic book of the same name, which was a tremendous success when it was published in 2021. As a commentary on the theme of the environment, the exhibition depicts an encounter and conversation between the two authors on the subject of energy, addressing topics such as its use over time, the boom in fossil fuels, the human impact on the environment and climate, and potential solutions to encourage the public to take action. Featuring 32 panels exhibited across the two sites, displaying excerpts from the original comic book, the exhibition aims to educate the young people who attend the schools in the Gare and Limpertsberg districts, as well as passers-by who are interested in ecology and the environment.

"Le monde sans fin" sold 800,000 copies in France in 2022, topping the bestseller lists that year. The adaptation of the comic book as an exhibition was spearheaded by the Institut Français du Luxembourg, with a view to capitalising on its potential to raise awareness of the challenges involved in achieving the ecological transition globally, through the network of Instituts Français, Alliances Françaises and their partners.

The exhibition runs until April 2025.

<![CDATA[The "KIDS CITY MAP" participatory project ]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/kids-city-map-participatory-project On Wednesday, an information session on the "KIDS CITY MAPP" participatory project was held at the Grand Théâtre for parents of elementary school pupils in cycles 3.1 to 4.2. The event was attended by the College of the Mayor and Aldermen, IKS Mobilitätsplanung – the engineering firm commissioned for the project –, the municipal departments involved (the Services Circulation, Enseignement, Topographie et Géomatique, Technologies de l'information et de la communication – Traffic, Education, Topography and Geomatics, Information and Communication Technology Departments), and the regional directorate of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

The "KIDS CITY MAP" project was presented to attendees, along with the various stages of its development, from the citizen participation process through to the finalisation of the city map for children.

A map of Luxembourg City, made by children, for children

Since the last Kids City Map was published over 15 years ago, the city has undergone a number of significant changes, including the appearance of several new neighbourhoods, infrastructure improvements – most notably in terms of safety around schools –, new schools, childcare centres and sports facilities, and the creation or upgrade of playgrounds and leisure areas.

The purpose of the "KIDS CITY MAP" project is to create a map of Luxembourg City for all of the city's children, listing major attractions, facilities for children, and various places of interest for children (sports and cultural infrastructures, playgrounds, sports and recreation areas, etc.). The project also aims to produce a list of measures that need to be implemented in order to cater to children's and their parents' needs and expectations in terms of quality facilities as fully as possible, and to rectify any shortcomings previously identified in local districts.

2,200 pupils in Cycles 3.1 to 4.2 invited to take part

Thus, the involvement of schoolchildren, parents and teachers is crucial to the project. Some 160 elementary school classes – i.e. around 2,200 cycle 3.1 to cycle 4.2 pupils – have been invited to take part in the project by plotting their daily routes through their neighbourhoods on an interactive map created by the City's Topography and Geomatics Department. The children can also pinpoint places that they think are dangerous to some degree, as well as places that they like to visit. Parents, meanwhile, will be given the opportunity to get involved in the project by taking part in an online survey, which will be published at the end of February 2025.

Once the responses have been assessed, the main findings will be incorporated into the "KIDS CITY MAP" project, which will be presented to the general public at the end of 2025, together with a list of short- and medium-term measures to create a more child-friendly city, and make Luxembourg City even more welcoming and family-friendly.

<![CDATA[On-street parking: beware of phishing scam]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/street-parking-beware-phishing-scam The City of Luxembourg wishes to inform the public that stickers seeking to scam users have been placed on a number of parking ticket machines in the capital, including Kirchberg. These stickers bear the words "SCAN AND PAY" along with fake QR code that directs users to a scam website, which uses the "Indigo Neo" logo and asks users for their personal information.

The City wishes to remind the public that only the "Indigo Neo" app, which requires a mobile download and the creation of a user account, can be used to pay for on-street parking in Luxembourg City. Any other payment option displayed on the city's parking ticket machines is neither valid nor legitimate. An explanatory sticker displaying the words "Indigo neo" is affixed to the back of the city's parking ticket machines and clearly outlines the steps users need to take to pay their parking fees.

The City is working to remove the fake stickers as quickly as possible, and a complaint has been lodged with the Grand Ducal Police. ]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/street-parking-beware-phishing-scam Mon, 20 Jan 2025 08:09:29 +0100 <![CDATA[Language café]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/language-cafe As in previous years, "J’aime mon quartier – Travail communautaire", an initiative spearheaded by the Association for the Support of Migrant Workers (ASTI), in collaboration with the Syndicat d'Initiative Eich-Dommeldange-Weimerskirch (local interest syndicate) and with logistical and financial support from the City of Luxembourg, offers monthly language cafés at the Drescherhaus Cultural Centre in Dommeldange. <![CDATA[Launch of the MEGARE project]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/launch-megare-project On Thursday, 16 January 2025, the City and UP_FOUNDATION officially launched the "MEGARE – Zesumme grouss ginn am Quartier Gare" programme, which aims to transform the Gare district into a vibrant and supportive place to live, with initiatives that centre on the positive development of children, and where cultural diversity is celebrated.

Through child-centered educational projects, the establishment and collaboration of a dynamic network of players, and the promotion of cultural diversity, "MEGARE" aims to foster the positive development of children, as well as increase their participation and visibility in neighborhood life, while strengthening social cohesion.

Two projects already in place

For the launch of this programme, two projects have already been already in place:

  • Friendly Guides – An initiative developed by our city's young residents, where children newly arrived in Luxembourg are paired with a local friend-guide. These young guides are specially trained to welcome new arrivals and help them integrate into their new environment.
  • Mini-Entdecker Club – Participatory tours of the Gare district where children can explore their surroundings and express themselves freely. Their views and perceptions are noted and taken into account in the development of future "MEGARE" projects.

Ambassadors for the Luxembourg City ultural melting pot

As one of the capital's most densely populated neighborhoods, Gare is home to some 11,400 residents – of which 82% hail from abroad – including 890 children under the age of 14. These children, who are the true ambassadors of Luxembourg City's cultural melting pot (which brings together around 120 different nationalities), are given the chance to become the driving force behind the development of community life. Belonging to a multitude of nationalities, ethnicities and religions, the children show through their interactions and friendships that diversity can be a strength, as well as a channel for solidarity and mutual respect.

<![CDATA[Opening of the temporary school building in Dommeldange]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/opening-temporary-school-building-dommeldange Background

The Luxembourg-Dommeldange school and sports complex, designed in 1980 by architect Jean Petit, today struggles to meet the needs and ambitions of a dynamic, ever-changing district. Having been designed to meet the requirements of its time, it is now too cramped, and unsuitable for modern learning and educational development standards. The premises, which were conceived to accommodate a small number of pupils, are straining to absorb the growing student body while supporting innovative, collaborative teaching methods. Moreover, the dated infrastructure is not flexible enough to adjust to meet current needs when it comes to athletic and extracurricular activities.

In light of these challenges, the City of Luxembourg has opted to breathe new life into this iconic site. The decision was made to renovate and modernise it with the aim of creating an environment that is in line with 21st-century educational requirements. ARCO – architecture company – was commissioned for the job. Seeking to marry reverence for history with modern risk-taking, the architects presented a design that beautifully incorporates certain exemplary elements of the 1980 original into the modern, functional infrastructure created for the new complex. This approach keeps the site's identity intact, while also bringing it right up to date.

A temporary building was put up so the children could continue to attend school during the renovations. This building was also constructed by ARCO – architecture company, along with JANS, a general contractor selected after tendering on the basis of functional specifications. It will give the children a temporary but improved space – an environment in which they are sure to thrive during this transition.

Description

In response to the needs expressed by the City of Luxembourg's Service Enseignement (Education Department) and Service Foyers scolaires (Childcare Department), the project entails:

  • Construction of a temporary school building: This building contains 18 classrooms for elementary school Cycles 1–4, 5 ancillary support rooms, a canteen, a snack kitchen, a teaching kitchen, a library, a craft room, and all the sanitary, technical and administrative facilities required for the smooth running of the school.
  • Construction of a schoolyard:
    • A total surface area of +/- 1,137 m2, divided into three spaces.
    • The first space, in front of the building entrance, includes a covered area measuring +/- 126 m2.
    • The second space is a 361 m2 asphalt surface.
    • The third space is a mulch-surface playground measuring +/- 650 m2.
  • Creation of a playground for the preschool: During the project, the City decided to develop an additional schoolyard on the southern side of the site. This schoolyard just for preschoolers gives them a space that is separate from those of the other age groups, keeping them safer and in a setting that is easier to oversee than the main schoolyard.

Functional architecture that is respectful of the site

The centrepiece of the project, which is both cost-effective and exemplary of the circular economy, is a rectangular building. This simple, functional shape is fluid and makes the most of the available plot of land.

The building extends harmoniously along the elongated configuration of the land, parallel to Rue Nicolas Hein. The space connecting Rue Nicolas Hein to Rue des Hauts-Fourneaux is dedicated to the schoolyard, creating an open area for the children to play in.

To minimise the environmental impact of this temporary building, the project team was determined to protect as many trees as possible, consequently preserving the site's verdant lushness and the integrity of its ecosystem.

Internal organisational structure

The building's internal organisational structure was designed to be simple and efficient. Each floor of the rectangular building has an identical single corridor running through the centre, forming the building's main artery. This corridor is more than just a space for people to pass through – it also functions as a transitional area where the pupils can leave their belongings and get ready to go into class.

The classrooms are located mainly along the front of the building. They face east so they can be pleasantly cool in the afternoon. The sanitary facilities are located in the centre of the building for easy access and so teachers and pupils can easily see them.

The main entrance, stairways and a ground-floor equipment room are located at the northern end of the building. On the upper floors are functional spaces for staff that are tailored to their needs.

At the southern end of the site there is a fire escape for the building's occupants to use to evacuate safely in case of fire.

Distribution of the cycles:

  • Cycle 1 (ground floor): 6 classrooms measuring +/- 68 m2
  • Cycles 2–3 (first floor): 2 classrooms measuring +/- 68 m2 and 4 classrooms measuring +/- 51 m2
  • Cycles 3–4 (second floor): 2 classrooms measuring +/- 68 m2 and 4 classrooms measuring +/- 51 m2

Energy design

The existing district heating system was modernised as part of the renovation and extension of the Dommeldange school and sports complex. During construction, a container equipped with a boiler was installed near the temporary school building to deliver heat to the district heating network.

The temporary school building also gets heat from this network. This is a reliable solution that satisfies energy demand during the transition.

Facades

The four facades of the temporary building are covered in elegant vertical wood cladding, which speaks of a subtle interplay between modernity and nature.

The windows – which are connected by aluminium panels that are slightly tinted to match the colour of the frames – create long horizontal strips that lend the building visual harmony.

The glass entrance, which bathes the inside of the building in light, is topped by an awning that gracefully merges into the existing vegetation, creating a smooth transition between the architecture and its natural environment.

The emergency stairway, located on the southern gable and covered in perforated sheet metal, plays with light and shade, adding an airy, modern dimension to this corner of the building.

Exteriors

The site slopes sharply between Rue Nicolas Hein and Rue des Hauts-Fourneaux. To work with this natural slope, the project team designed the landscaping like a cascade, with three successive levels boasting functional, carefully planned play areas.

The first (B), which is like the entry threshold, is paved with concrete. It is right next to Rue Nicolas Hein and provides easy access to the building. This level extends to the back of the building, where it becomes an inviting terrace adjoining the canteen. A covered courtyard measuring around 126 m2 spans nearly all of this space, creating a sheltered, pleasant area where users are shielded from unpredictable weather.

The second level (C), with a surface area of around 360 m2, is asphalted. This level, which blends seamlessly into the existing natural land, can be reached by a wide stairway and a ramp for people with reduced mobility that also functions as a retaining wall between the two lower levels.

The third level (D) measures around 650 m2 and is made of mulch – a natural, flexible material. This level, only accessible by a stairway, is a fun space designed to be a place where children can thrive.

Levels 2 and 3 will host a variety of outdoor games that are carefully incorporated to make these spaces ideal for relaxation and playing in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape.

During the project, the City decided to develop an additional schoolyard on the southern part of the site. This schoolyard, which is reserved for preschoolers, will give them a separate space that is safer and easier to oversee than the main schoolyard.

<![CDATA["Pedibus": new lines and chaperone call for applications]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/pedibus-new-lines-and-chaperone-call-applications With a view to launching a number of new Walking Bus (Pedibus) lines in Kirchberg and Limpertsberg after the Carnival school break, the City is once again calling for applications to chaperone children on their trips to and from elementary school.

6 new lines

A total of 6 new lines will have been selected by the City's Service Circulation (Traffic Department) based on the school's location, the children's places of residence, the urban structure of the neighbourhood, the road network and the location of main thoroughfares. Among these, 2 lines will serve the school in Rue Anne Beffort (cycles 1-4) in Kirchberg, and 4 lines will serve the school in Rue Ermesinde (cycle 1) in Limpertsberg. Please note that the launch of these new lines depends on the number of accompanying adults available and the number of children registered.

An environmentally-friendly mode of transport

The Walking Bus is an eco-friendly way for children to get to school: it runs according to a set timetable and route in various districts of the capital, picking up children at signposted stops. The children are accompanied by adults, who guide them on foot to their school and back to the nearest stop to their home at the end of the school day. With this project, the City aims to:

  • protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • strengthen social cohesion and interaction;
  • increase safety around schools by reducing the number of motorised vehicles;
  • educate children from an early age about road safety;
  • promote children's health through the benefits of movement and walking.

Due to the resounding success of the project since its launch in 2021, the City will continue to explore the possibility of further extending the scheme in other parts of the capital.

<![CDATA["Mir, Wir, Nous, Us": new sculpture by Florence Hoffmann]]> https://www.vdl.lu/en/news/mir-wir-nous-us-new-sculpture-florence-hoffmann On Thursday, 9 January 2025, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen inaugurated the sculpture entitled "Mir, Wir, Nous, Us", which was produced by the Franco-Luxembourgish artist Florence Hoffmann as part of the BOX urban art project.

Spotlight on multiculturalism in Luxembourg City

The work – a 3-metre high sculpture made of cement, fibreglass, polystyrene, silicon, iron and stainless steel – casts a spotlight on multiculturalism in Luxembourg City by incorporating the symbols of the five most widely practised religions in the world: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. The symbols are interconnected like the links of a chain in which each connecting element contributes to forming a united whole. This means that any forces exerted on one of the links can jeopardise the balance and integrity of the whole. Through her sculpture, the artist – for whom the human experience is one of her favourite themes – invites viewers to ponder the notion of social cohesion and living together in the world, and seeks to convey a message of tolerance and encourage understanding and mutual respect. The sculpture will be on display in Place des Bains until spring 2025.

The BOX project

Every winter since 2018, the BOX urban art project has been installed near the Badanstalt Aquatic Relaxation Centre, between Boulevard Royal and Avenue Jean-Pierre Pescatore. The wooden boxlike structure that is put up around the spherical fountain to protect it from the winter weather is used as the base for a temporary artwork. Every year, a different artist or collective is selected to use this space to showcase their work.

The BOX project is organised by the City's Service Coordination culturelle (Cultural Coordination Department) in partnership with the Service Hygiène (Sanitation Department).
