Festive, winter-wonderland atmosphere in Luxembourg City

Shopping Noël

Art and culture

Regrettably, this year's Winterlights festival, with its now-traditional Christmas market, ice rink and assorted Christmas attractions and events, has had to be cancelled. Nevertheless, residents and visitors alike will still be able to enjoy the festive, winter-wonderland atmosphere that pervades the city at this time of year, and delight in the beauty of the capital. Numerous cultural sites and institutions will be offering a rich (though slimmed down) programme of events.

The City of Luxembourg would like to remind everyone to observe the applicable public-health measures while they enjoy the festivities.

Christmas lights

From Friday, 20 November 2020 to Sunday, 10 January 2021, Christmas illuminations will adorn Luxembourg City's streets and squares: the lights will be switched on every day from 6:00 to midnight, extending the atmosphere of warmth and wonder well into the night.

This year, to further enhance the city's appeal and the warm, festive atmosphere, the City will be putting up a series of new illuminations as part of its multi-year plan.

What's new in 2020: "Cœur géant", "Sapin royal" and "Péckvillercher"

This year, a vast heart-shaped arch – 8 m high and 12 m wide – will be erected on Place d'Armes. A 10-metre high "sapin royal" (giant Christmas tree), decorated with heart-shaped lights, will take pride of place on Place Émile Hamilius. An illuminated decoration depicting "Péckvillercher" (whistling birds) will be set up in the old part of the city, in the vicinity of Rue Sigefroi.

The recently planted trees along Avenue de la Liberté will be decorated with garlands of twinkling lights, adding to the splendour of this major thoroughfare.

These are just some of the new decorative installations, which span multiple city districts.

Of the new illuminations introduced in 2019, the "Adventskalenner" (previously on Place Émile Hamilius) will be relocated this year to Place du Théâtre and will be lit up every day from 1 to 24 December 2020, on the hour between 17:00 and 21:00. The Tree Light Show, during which trees on Place d'Armes are lit up for 1–2 minutes, will be maintained this year. They will be lit every day, each half hour, between 17:30 and 21:00.

The city's illuminations: key figures

For the capital's Christmas illuminations, the City has installed 1,328 decorative displays (composed of 2,748 arrangements) across the capital, including:

  • existing fir trees decked with garland lighting: 11
  • temporary fir trees decked with garland lighting: 16
  • decorative fir trees decked with garland lighting: 514
  • trees decked with garland lighting: 272
  • street-light decorations: 446
  • suspended decorations: 32
  • ground-lighting decorations: 37
  • overall length of garland lighting installed by the City: +/- 65 km

In 2020, some 707,000 low-energy LED blinker lights and bulbs will be used to create a warm, festive atmosphere that is also environmentally friendly.

Programme of cultural and tourist events

During the festive season, visitors will be delighted by a rich programme of theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions and films. Everyone is sure to find something to suit their taste!

Please note that everyone must comply with the applicable public-health measures. The organisers reserve the right to cancel their event at any time.
