On Tuesday, 14 March 2023, Patrick Goldschmidt, alderman in charge of environmental matters, and officials from the City’s Service Hygiène (Sanitation Department) received a delegation from Rwanda at the Recycling Centre on Rue du Stade. The visit was part of a bilateral exchange between the Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Rwandan Environment Ministry, further to a decision to foster closer cooperation and the transfer of knowledge and technology between the two countries. The delegation from the Republic of Rwanda included political dignitaries, representatives from the administrative authorities for environmental matters, urban development, and water and sanitation, delegates from other local services in the city of Kigali and other urban areas of Rwanda, and representatives from the private sector.
The City’s Service Hygiène, with its experience in raising awareness and providing advice on waste management, was delighted to share its vision, role and activities in matters relating to the circular economy and resource management.
The Rwandan delegation was particularly interested in integrated approaches to sustainable waste management and circular economy business models as a means of boosting the capacity of Rwanda’s existing waste management system. The study visit was undertaken as part of the "Waste to Resources: Improving Municipal Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Management in Rwanda" project, which is being implemented by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) with funding from the Luxembourg Climate and Energy Fund (international climate funding), and which provides for the exchange of knowledge between the stakeholders.
