On 17 February 2021, the "Bikeport" – a bike rack with an outline of a car on one side – opened at its new location on Avenue Victor Hugo in the parking lane near the Limpertsberg church.
This car-sized structure has space for around 10 cyclists to park their bikes on the public thoroughfare. The purpose of the "Bikeport" is two-fold: it serves the need for bike parking in Luxembourg City, and raises awareness of an alternative, more responsible use of public spaces. It is conveniently located in a densely populated district and right on cycle path 12, which connects Limpertsberg to the city centre.
The "Bikeport" was originally installed in 2012 on Rue du Fossé, and in 2016 it was relocated to Rue Notre-Dame. With the aim of communicating a positive message and promoting cycling in Luxembourg City, the "Bikeport" is moved regularly in order to draw people's attention to active travel.
The initiative dovetails with the City of Luxembourg's transport strategy, which strives to expand local cycling infrastructure and encourage people to use bikes.
