On Election Day
Election notice
At least five days before election day, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen sends each registered voter an election notice that states the election date, the times when the polls open and close, and their polling station, and if there is more than one polling station, the name of the one the voter is assigned to.
Voting by post
Voters who wish to vote by post must send their postal vote application to the College of the Mayor and Aldermen of the municipality where they are registered to vote and request their election notice. Applications must be submitted either online through the www.myguichet.lu portal, or on a separate sheet of paper, or on a pre-printed form that is available at the administrative offices of the municipality where the voter resides.
The application must include the voter's first name and surname, their date and place of birth and place of residence, and the address to which the election notice should be sent. The application must be submitted online or reach the College of the Mayor and Aldermen by post, on penalty of forfeiture, at the earliest 12 weeks, and at the latest 25 days before election day, if the election notice is to be sent to an address in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. If the election notice is to be sent to a foreign address, the application must reach the College of the Mayor and Aldermen at least 40 days before election day.
All postal vote application forms must be received by the municipal office:
- no later than 40 days before election day (deadline: 2 May 2023), if the election notice is to be sent an address abroad.
- no later than 25 days before election day (deadline: 17 May 2023), if the election notice is to be sent to a Luxembourg address.
Application to the Public Prosecutor to be excused
Voting is compulsory for everyone who is registered to vote.
Voters who are unable to vote must notify the Public Prosecutor with territorial jurisdiction for their place of residence, stating their reasons and providing the necessary supporting documents. If the Public Prosecutor considers that the reasons given are valid, no legal proceedings will be initiated against the voter.
The following are automatically exempted from voting:
- voters who, at the time of the election, reside in a municipality other than the one where they are called to vote;
- voters over 75 years of age.
