Maison Robert Schuman (birth place of Robert Schuman)
History
People have lived in Clausen since the Middle Ages, drawn to the area by the Alzette river. Its Altmünster plateau overlooking the Alzette became the site of the Benedictine abbey of Munster in the 11th century, which then moved to the Grund in 1543.
Shortly thereafter, the Count of Mansfeld (city governor from 1545 to 1604) left his mark upon the face of Clausen – one which endures to the present day. The vestiges of his sumptuous château and gardens now belong to a heritage site that has been made into a park. Nearby, you'll find the buildings of now-abandoned breweries, which have also become a key architectural feature of this lively neighbourhood.
