Project description

The City is building a bike lane that will link the north and south of Limpertsberg. It will be located on Avenue Louis Pasteur, between Rue Henri VII and Allée Schaeffer. This initiative, undertaken in response to cyclists' wishes, will create a dedicated north-south link in Limpertsberg that will enable cyclists to get around the district safely. These works – which are currently in phase 1 – are being carried out by:

  • VDL – Service Voirie (Department of Streets):Creation of a two-way cycle lane, creation of an area for terraces for all local businesses, upgrade of pedestrian walkways to make them more accessible for persons with reduced mobility, upgrade of bus stops, installation of paving stones on the pedestrian walkways on both sides, creation of asphalt parking lanes interspersed with tree pits.
  • VDL – Service Parcs (Parks Department): With regard to the 23 trees removed from both sides of Avenue Pasteur: 11 new trees will be planted on the odd-numbered side of this street, while compensation planting will be carried out on Rue Jules Mersch to replace the other 12 trees that were felled. These new trees on Avenue Pasteur will be better able to grow and thrive, as they will be planted in larger underground tree pits.

The second phase of the project, which aims to incorporate the proposals put forward by the district's residents to extend the cycle lane to Rue Ermesinde, is currently being drawn up and will be put to a vote by the municipal council shortly.

Civic engagement

Following longstanding calls by residents, cyclists and the local interest group for a north-south cycle lane in Limpertsberg, the City of Luxembourg held an initial public meeting in July 2019 to present three potential projects. The project currently being realised was selected and approved with a large majority by the municipal council in February 2020.

Following an information session for residents on how the works were going to be carried out on Avenue Pasteur in September 2021, it was decided that another public meeting would be held.

In October 2021, a working group session was held with residents from all over Limpertsberg, and proposals were developed with the active participation of those in attendance. The City of Luxembourg's various municipal departments then closely examined the remarks and complaints shared during this session, and then presented their results to the college of the mayor and aldermen, who selected the final plans for the project in January 2022.

Stay informed

To make life easier for residents while these works are being carried out, the City of Luxembourg has implemented a series of measures, including the option to participate in meetings regarding the progress of the work. Residents affected by the works may participate in these meetings to obtain additional information about the project's progress and present any complaints they may have.
